Jl MC Emphasis Areas within the Jl MC Major

The journalism and mass communication major offers a variety of emphasis areas including: electronic media, print (newspaper or magazine), public relations/public affairs, science communication and visual communication. Within each of these areas is an array of courses. Majors have opportunities outside the classroom, including Ad Club, Broadcast Club, Ethos magazine, the Iowa State Daily, ISUtv, Public Relations Student Society of America, Society of Professional Journalists, Uhurú magazine and more.

Electronic Media Studies
Electronic media studies is a forward-moving emphasis that trains students for careers in radio and television news. The emphasis is on reporting and news writing. Students have the opportunity to work with audiotape, videotape, the Internet and other audiovisual resources.

Print
The print emphasis trains students for careers in magazines and newspapers. This area focuses on interviewing, writing and editing.

Public Relations
The public relations emphasis covers the basic PR process. Students learn general communication theory and examine methods to solve problems in communication. The emphasis trains students on campaign development, research, message strategy, media relations and event planning.

Science Communication
Science communication teaches students effective reporting and writing skills to disseminate information about science, technology, and agriculture to a range of publics through a variety of channels. The emphasis is appropriate for media professionals and those with a science background.

Visual Communication
Visual communication teaches students how to convey visual elements to communicate a specific idea or image. The emphasis prepares students for careers in graphic design, photojournalism and desktop publishing.
