Students must pass the School administered English Usage Test (EUT) in accordance with the following guidelines:

Students entering the School as freshmen pre-advertising or pre-journalism and mass communication majors, whose entrance is not accompanied by an ACT-E of 26 or higher, or an SAT-V score of 590 or higher, will have one calendar year from the start of their first term as a Pre-Advrt or Pre-Jl MC major to meet the requirement for the English Usage Test.

Students entering the School as transfer students, either from other institutions or from within Iowa State, must pass the School's English Usage Test or provide evidence of having received a score on the ACT-E of 26 or higher, or SAT-V of 590 or higher, by the end of their second full academic term in the School as a pre-major.

Students who do not pass the English Usage Test or provide evidence of being eligible for an ACT-E or SAT-V waiver within the allotted time period will have the option of transferring to a major outside the Greenlee School, or will be transferred to LAS Open Option for academic advising.

Students may reenter the Greenlee School as pre-majors, upon providing evidence of being eligible for the ACT-E or SAT-V waiver. Students who have failed the English Usage Test a third time do not receive additional English Usage Test retakes.

For additional information on the 2007-2009 EUT Policy, please visit the Greenlee School Student Services Office at 178 Hamilton Hall.

WHAT DOES THE EUT CONSIST OF?

The test is designed to measure competency in basic English skills: grammar, punctuation, word usage and spelling. The test contains 80 multiple-choice items, of which students must correctly answer 56 to pass. Items are equally weighted, and no one question counts more heavily than another. Scores for the test are posted the Monday following the test on the bulletin board outside 178 Hamilton Hall.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE EUT?

You must sign up for the EUT in the Greenlee School Student Services Office, 178 Hamilton Hall, by 3 p.m. the day prior to the test. Please choose one 1-hour time slot. Testing Services can only accommodate seven students for each time slot, so be prepared with alternative dates and times. The test will begin promptly at the designated time, and latecomers will need to reschedule. If you are unable to make your appointment, please call the SCS Testing Office at 294-5058 immediately. Students must bring a photo ID and two No. 2 pencils to the test. All other materials will be provided. See the Greenlee School Student Services Office if you need special accommodations.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

To take the test outside of Jl MC 110, there will be a $15 charge, billed directly to your U-Bill.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I TAKE IT?

Jl MC and Advrt majors have four opportunities to pass the test – once in Jl MC 110 and three additional times through testing services. All other students will have three opportunities.

HOW DO I PREPARE?

Students can prepare for the exam by using Callihan's Grammar for Journalists, Diamond's English the Easy Way or Kessler's When Words Collide, which are on reserve at ISU Parks Library or in the Greenlee School Reading Room. Practice tests are also available in the Greenlee School Reading Room. Students may visit the Greenlee School Web site (www.jlmc.iastate.edu) for links to grammar preparation Web sites and spelling words used on the exam.

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR Jl MC 201?

Students who pass the EUT and who have completed English 150 and 250 with a C or better may register for Jl MC 201 by getting a restriction waiver from the Greenlee School Student Services Office in 178 Hamilton Hall. Students need to take the restriction waiver to 10 Alumni Hall and will be added to a section of Jl MC 201 based on availability. The restriction waiver does not guarantee a seat in 201; it simply gives you permission to be added to the course if a seat is open. Students cannot register for 201 on AccessPlus. Students should anticipate taking Jl MC 201 the second semester of their sophomore year to the first semester of their junior year to stay on track for graduation.
