Scholarships

The Greenlee School awards over $100,000 to students annually (see the Greenlee School Scholarship Report FY11-FY13 or individual awards lists for details). Scholarship awards are usually between $1,000 and $5,000 per award, however, amounts are determined by availability of funding as well as for exceptional performance or financial need.

The majority of Greenlee School scholarships are awarded annually through a standard online application process for both current and incoming students. There are a few special scholarships are awarded during the year announced by proposal call via e-mail. Students are greatly encouraged to watch for e-mail with any mention of scholarships in the subject line.

The annual call for scholarship applications allows submissions between Thanksgiving break and January 31st.  Watch for open enrollment announcements via e-mail and on this website.

Applications are reviewed in February and official award notices are sent in March. All notifications of awards will be sent via e-mail. Current students will receive their notices via Iowa State e-mail accounts and incoming students will receive award notices using the e-mail they submit on their application forms. Award notices include instructions and deadlines for accepting the scholarships. We will award all the scholarships that alumni and friends donate each year. Therefore, scholarships that are not accepted by the deadline will be re-issued to other students.

Scholarships are awarded for the fall and spring semesters directly following the award notice unless otherwise stated as a summer or special scholarship. Fall/spring scholarships are divided between fall and spring semesters. Students graduating in fall will receive only the 50% awarded for fall. Fall/spring scholarships are not transferrable to summer.

Students must be enrolled full-time in the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in the semester in which the scholarship is issued. Students are considered full-time during the semester for which they are enrolled in JL MC 499 – Professional Media Internship.

Scholarship criteria are the standard rules for judging scholarships. Each scholarship has its own set of criterion designed by the original donor in a contract with Iowa State University. The Greenlee School scholarship committee is required to adhere to all criteria for each scholarship awarded.

Transferring out of the School or dropping below full-time status during the semester in which the scholarship is issued will result in the forfeiture of the scholarship. Alumni and friends have donated scholarships specifically for Greenlee School students majoring in advertising or journalism and mass communication.
