Guidelines

  1. Applicants must be journalism and mass communication majors (no premajors) who at the time of submission plan to spend at least two full semesters at ISU before graduation. Semester of application counts as one of the two full semesters.
  2. Applicants must submit a 1,000-2,000 word essay on the challenges, principles and importance of reporting on the modern presidency.
  3. Themes of essays should focus on social responsibility, especially as that press theory applies to a print journalist covering the executive branch.
  4. Content of essays should consider and/or put into context the implications of Hugh Sidey's belief that the U.S. presidency remains "the most sought-after, analyzed and scrutinized" political office on earth.
  5. Do not include your name in your essay. Do include a cover sheet with your name, title of your essay, Ames address, telephone, cell phone and email.
  6. Turn in your essay before noon on March 9, 2009 to Kim McDonough in 178 Hamilton Hall.
  7. Judges are Michael Bugeja, Greenlee School director; Ken Sidey, editor, Meredith; and Lou Thompson, chair, Advisory Council.

Please note

The Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship is made possible through the generosity of Mr. David M. Rubenstein and the White House Historical Association.

Proceeds from the scholarship must be used to pay tuition and fees in addition to class supplies, textooks and journalism-related software from the ISU book store.

The winner will be asked to sign an agreement allowing the publication of the winning essay on the WHHA Web site, or in other WHHA publications. The winner promises to provide both the Greenlee School and the WHHA regular updates (at least annually) on his or her career progress, along with permission to publish those updates in print or online as appropriate.
