Greenlee School Achievements - April 2009David Bulla and Dennis Chamberlin Win FellowshipsThe Council on Excellence in Arts and Humanities (CEAH) has named Greenlee Assistant Professors Dennis Chamberlin and David Bulla its 2009-2010 fellowship recipients. Chamberlin was awarded the fellowship for a project titled “Voices of the Immigration Experience.” Chamberlin wants to document a wide range of experiences, including encounters with discrimination and harassment. He already has been collecting audio recordings of the stories of various immigrants in Ames. The project also includes photos to accompany the stories. Chamberlin plans to create an exhibit of images, text, and audio. His exhibit will be on display in the Memorial Union beginning on September 3rd before becoming a traveling exhibit around the state of Iowa. David Bulla received a fellowship to allow him more time to work on a media history book titled Journalism in the Civil War Era. Bulla is the primary author of the book; his coauthor is Greg Borchard. Dr. Borchard is an Assistant Profess of Mass Communication and Journalism at the Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. Their work details the state of journalism just prior to the Civil War, how journalistic practices changed during the war, and how those effects continued following the end of the war. Bulla also reports other accomplishments in the month of April, including a publication, "Iowa's officials are still too secretive," Des Moines Business Record, April 4, 2009, and a review of Freedom for the Thought That We Hate: A Biography of the First Amendment, in American Journalism, Fall 2008, Vol. 25, No..4, 124-126. He will write a 500-word column about online auctions for Coin World’s digital newsletter and help the largest numismatist magazine make the transition from print to the Web. Bugeja also was asked to with Howard Rheingold, author of Smart Mobs, and other advisers of News Trust to develop a news literacy site for the journalism social network. He also spoke about the interpersonal divide to a variety of media requesting interviews, including the Columbia News Service. He gave a presentation on that topic at DMACC-Boone and a presentation on poetry to ISU Alumni Seniors College. He reports citations of his 2004 article “Battle of the Online Brands: Disney Loses Internet Portal War,” in Television & & New Media, Vol. 5, No. Blevins also has been named guest editor (with Leslie Regan Shade, Concordia University, Canada) for the Spring 2010 issue of the Global Media Journal--Canadian Edition. He also will be reviewing for the Cultural & Critical Studies Division of AEJMC for the upcoming national conference in Boston, MA, August 2009. In the area of service, he was elected to the Faculty Senate as a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at-large representative. In the area of teaching, she discussed the issue of the global digital divide as a virtual guest speaker to a graduate class at the University of Missouri’s Center for the Digital Globe. She also served a judge for AEJMC’s "Best of the Web 2009" competition, which is jointly organized by the Communication Technology and Visual Communication divisions. Contact: Jacob Groshek, Assistant Professor jgroshek@gmail.com Jay NewellJay Newell notes a co-authored publication, “Tragedies of the Broadcast Commons: Consumer Perspectives on the Ethics of Product Placement and V Video News Releases, accepted for publication by the Journal of Mass Media Ethics. The article, co-authored with Jeff Blevins and Michael Bugeja, looks at the ethics of saturating entertainment and news with marketing messages. Additionally, Newell chaired a research panel last month at the American Academy of Advertising conference on marketing to Generation Y. In teaching, Newell was named a 2009 Wakonse Teaching Fellow by Iowa State University. This summer in Michigan Newell will join 300 faculty, administrators and grad students from across the country for a five-day seminar on improving teaching practice. And in service, he is chairing the special topic papers competition of the AEJMC's Advertising Division. “Being on the other side of the paper process from the authors is quite a learning experience,” he notes. Contact: Jay Newell, Assistant Professor newelljj@iastate.edu Erin WilgenbuschErin Wilgenbusch reports that PRSSA held its first-ever Film Festival on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5. On Saturday, Writer and Director Andrew Robinson, gave a lecture and workshop on scriptwriting and pitching your script to producers. His film, April Showers, opens this week. It is a feature film based on his experiences as a student at Columbine High School when two students opened fire on the rest of the student body. On Sunday, we showed the top 5 entries in our short-film festival, followed by a showing of Slumdog Millionaire. On April 8, PRSSA coordinated an internship/job panel with the LAS Career Services. Kim Caponi helped our student committee bring in five professionals to speak as part of a panel for one hour, followed by a networking reception. On April 25, approximately 10 of our PRSSA students, and Wilgenbusch are going to Parkersburg to volunteer time to rebuild the city park. “The playground equipment has all been donated as has food to feed the volunteers,” she writes. “We are looking forward to this service opportunity.” Contact: Erin Wilgenbusch, Lecturer eew@iastate.edu 2009-04-19 |
