Greenlee School Showcased on New AEJMC Site

In “Discussing JMC,” a new feature on a Web site hosted by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, interviewer Mich Sineath asks Michael Bugeja questions about the state of the media, including: “How do you keep your students excited about working in the field of communications in light of shrinking job opportunities?”

Bugeja responds: “Iowa State University can boast the best student newspaper in the country, at least for awhile still, as our Iowa State Daily was chosen last year by the Society of Professional Journalists. See: http://www.las.iastate.edu/newnews/dailyaward.shtml. We are fortunate to have topnotch journalism and advertising practitioners in Hamilton Hall where both the Daily and the Greenlee School are located.

Students see us get excited by the news or creativity. They see us shoot pictures, do campaigns, file stories ourselves, challenge theories or create new ones in class, predict legal precedents or prophesy ethical dilemmas as case studies. Then, too, we have a steady stream of professionals–many from our alumni base–visiting us each month. We have about 10 student media and media organizations, including an ad agency and an integrated media suite, with 400-hour internships (and more) sponsored by the likes of Meredith Corporation or Scripps.

We don’t focus on the shrinking job opportunities but on our core value of the First Amendment, and we use our nationally recognized First Amendment Day (sponsored by Lee Enterprises) as a recruiting tool.”

In other AEJMC news, Barbara B. Hines, professor and director of the graduate program in mass communication and media studies at Howard University, and current AEJMC president, has asked Bugeja to be a commentator on the organization’s new blog called “Hot Topics.”

Other Good News Concerning:

Jeff Blevins

Jeff Blevins reports that he is the Den Leader for the Tigers of Cub Scout Pack 196 in Ames.

“On Jan. 26th,” he writes, “we did a tour of the Ames Tribune newspaper led by Advertising Sales Manager Mark Sharpe. The Scouts, aged 6-7 years old, learned how newspapers collect and report information, as well their important role in documenting history. We also discussed accuracy in reporting and how newspapers serve communities. Additionally, they learned some of the nuts and bolts about how the printing press works(which, admittedly, was the Scouts' favorite part). I plan to invite Mr. Sharpe to speak about advertising in my ethics class later this term, which he has agreed to do.”

Blevins also was the feature subject for an Iowa State University News Service release about consumer drawbacks to digital television conversion, January 21, 2009 (available online at http://www.public.iastate.edu/~nscentral/news/2009/jan/digitaltv.shtml) . The release has been featured on front page of Iowa State University’s Web site.

Lastly, he was interviewed and on-air source for radio news story about the February 2009 transition to digital-only television broadcasting by Dave Sprau, KASI-AM News Talk 1430, Ames, Iowa on January 21, 2009.
