Lulu Rodriguez is Co-PI for $100,000 Grant Teaching Young Drivers Safer Behavior

Lulu Rodriguez will be working with Tom McDonald of the Center for Transportation Research and Education on a project to help young drivers discover safe driving behaviors for themselves in a way that differs from the typical driver’s perspective by “solving” safety problems from an engineering/design perspective. This approach, writes Lulu, gives young drivers a completely new understanding of driver safety.

“To accomplish this, we will develop several interactive ‘discovery’ learning modules that require active problem solving on topics such as red-light running, driving on gravel roads, winter driving, navigating work zones, and negotiating complex intersections,” she added.

As much as possible all modules will rely on real-world data and tools, like those used by transportation professionals.

“We will also develop and implement a creative outreach program to market the modules to various audiences, focusing on encouraging module use among young Iowa drivers,” she noted.

The grant also will evaluate effectiveness through formative, process, and summative evaluation techniques and, based on the results, provide appropriate suggestions regarding additional safety data needed, potential future improvements to the modules, broader implementation of the program beyond Iowa.

John Thomas

John Thomas writes that he has been networking with James Heckmann, director of the Small Business Development Centers for the state of Iowa (SBDC).

“They have 15 offices across the state, with the central office here in Gerdin. Last fall, I used one of his entrepreneurial clients in ADVRT 301. We really overwhelmed the client which then led to more requests. In December for a final exam/paper, Jim presented both of my classes with his communication problems -- the students responded by developing strategies and ideas that he can apply to his individual centers. As an outcome, he is now looking to our school to supply some internships.”

For the spring semester of his 301 class Heckmann has requested that students help develop a communication program for BIZNET, an entrepreneur support program that will be launched nationally.

On the creative front, John notes that two years ago he tried to win the Thatcher Hoffman Smith Creativity in Motion Prize. “I made the final cut with the tetrad [research], but did not win the award. They offered the prize again for 2009, and I applied, and was notified late fall that I am again a finalist.” This time he proposed a graphic textbook for teaching creativity. ”My proposal is essentially in the form of a comic book -- it is pretty cutting edge, and exciting. They will announce the winner in late April.“

He also is teaching another creativity-based honors course this spring. Also he is holding a workshop with learning community coordinators on Jan. 26 and speaking to a group of entrepreneurs about marketing communications at DMACC on Feb. 4.
