Let Freedom Ring with Visions of FreedomVisions of Freedom will shine bright in The Gallery of the Memorial Union Thursday, Jan. 31 as a kickoff to First Amendment Day, sponsored by the Greenlee School and the Society of Professional Journalists.
Photo by Will Counts Visions of Freedom is a presentation of both dialogue and photograph that tells a story of freedom through individual meanings and encounters. Photographs depicting moments of freedom will be displayed while presenters discuss the depictions of freedom and what it means to them. Dione Somerville, Dean of Students, is one of the presenters who will speak on behalf of the Black Student Alliance. Somerville will talk about the photograph of Elizabeth Eckford trying to enter Little Rock, Ark., Central High School in 1957. The photograph was taken by Arkansas Democrat photographer Will Counts and it was a runner-up for a Pulitzer Prize. Other speakers who will talk about Visions of Freedom are associate professor Barbara Mack for the Leo Mores Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; David Ernesto Romero and Claudia Marcela Prado-Meza for Latino Americanos; and assistant professor Warren Blumenfeld for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally Alliance. The event will take place from 7 – 8:30 p.m. and each presenter will discuss his or her iconic photograph depicting freedom, along with its significance. Each presenter will have 15 minutes to speak and after all the presentations have ended there will be a 20-minute roundtable discussion on freedom. 2008-01-23 |
