Eric AbbottEric Abbott Has Banner Month Eric Abbott, director of graduate education, has garnered several school, college and national awards and other distinctions honoring his research, service and teaching. Abbott received the LAS International Faculty award, presented April 1, 2008, at the LAS annual international dinner. One award is presented each year to a faculty member in the college who has achieved excellence in international activities. (He previously received the University’s Wilton Park Award in 1998. This is the highest award the university presents for international work). He also became the second recipient of the Greenlee School Lou Thompson/Harry Heath advising award, presented Friday, April 11. Abbott will receive the Association for Communication Excellence (ACE) International Award of Excellence, which will be presented June 11, 2008, at the annual ACE convention. The award is given to members who have exhibited excellence in international communication activities. As chair of the International Special Interest Group for five years, Abbott helped create the organization’s first international affiliate group in Russia, and organized an ACE Summit meeting in Russia attended by 40 participants, including five present and past presidents of the organization. (Greenlee School emeritus professor Bob Kern was one of them.) He and Lulu Rodriguez co-authored the Top Faculty Research Paper to be presented June 10, 2008, at the ACE annual meeting in Traverse City, Michigan. The paper’s title is “Genetically Modified Crops in Developing Countries: A Meta-Analysis of Mass Media Coverage, Public Knowledge and Attitudes.” Abbott will present a session June 12 at the ACE conference entitled “Globalizing university research, teaching and extension: Success stories and opportunities.” This will focus on his work done here at Iowa State under a grant from the Council on International Programs and the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. This year, he taught portions of courses in three colleges here at ISU that challenge students to engage with international development technologies and issues. On April 20, he was the keynote speaker at the centennial celebration of the Life Sciences Communication Department, University of Wisconsin, Madison. The department’s newly dedicated building, Hiram Smith Hall, was dedicated as a part of the event. My speech was entitled: “History of Agricultural Journalism.” Abbott has an M.S. degree in Agricultural Journalism from the department, and a Ph.D. in Mass Communications offered jointly by the department and the J-School at Wisconsin. However, an "Online First" version of the manuscript is already available through the Sage Publishing website at http://tvn.sagepub.com/pap.dtl. An earlier publication this year Blevins, J. L., & Anton, F. (2008). Muted Voices in the Legislative Process: The Role of Scholarship in US Congressional Efforts to Protect Children from Online Pornography. New Media & Society, Vol. 10, No. 1 (pp. 115-137)--is also available in a new online venue at http://www.forum.newmediaandsociety.com/. The site is primarily a discussion forum, where readers and authors of journal contributions can exchange comments and debate issues relating to their studies. As for service contributions, Blevins is serving as a paper reviewer for two divisions this year for the upcoming AEJMC conference in Chicago--the Cultural & Critical Studies Division, and the Scholastic Journalism Division. He also is listed on the AEJMC Law & Policy Division's newly created Speakers Bureau, which is an online database of division members who are available for media interviews and other public service activities based on their individual areas of expertise in communication policy and law. The database is available at http://www.aejmc.net/law/bureau.php. He writes, “I also have a profile on the Social Science Research Council's Media Research Hub ( http://mediaresearchhub.ssrc.org), which is a similar resource for rrsearchers, activists and practitioners.” Lastly, on April 20th he was recognized along with other faculty mentors at the Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program 5th Annual Research Symposium. Throughout the past academic year Blevins has been mentoring Karla Martinez Silverio on her research project, "Minority Broadcast Ownership: A Civil Rights Perspective." Bulla, Assistant Professor dbulla@iastate.edu Dennis ChamberlinAssistant professor Dennis Chamberlin reports that the year is ending on a positive note for student photographers in the Greenlee School. Last month the photo staff at The Daily won eight (out of 12 possible) SPJ Region 7 Mark of Excellence awards. The final standings for the Hearst Intercollegiate Photojournalism Competition were announced earlier this month and the point total from our entries this year places Iowa State University in the top ten rankings. Entries by Ross LaDue and Dan McClanahan were recognized earlier in the year with awards and these points were enough to put our school in ninth place out of 108 programs that are accredited. McClanahan was also recently recognized by http://oxygen.ie/page/1443 , Ireland’s major collegiate web site, as the Collegiate Photographer of the Year for 2008. Dan was at University College in Cork last semester as part of the study abroad Regent’s Semester Abroad program. The Poland Through a Lens study abroad course is up and running and Chamberlin will be leading a group of nine students to Poland in mid May for the four week multi-media workshop. All the work will be posted on the web and updates will be made throughout the month of travel. Follow the class at http://poland.jlmc.iastate.edu. Graduate students in Chamberlin’s Imaging Iowa seminar are arranging the final details for the Biofuel Roundtable that they are organizing with scientists, ethicists, political and industry leaders to discuss the implications of the bio-economy for Iowans. This roundtable will take place on May 7 and recorded and placed on the informational website that the class is building. More information can be found at www.imagingiowa.org Chamberlin also reports that his classes (JlMC 310 and 312x) recently participated in two successful video conferences with TIME Magazine photographer Chris Usher. Usher, speaking from his home in Washington D.C., has been recognized for his work dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He spoke about this project and answered a number of questions from students ranging from how he works in stressful and dangerous situations to what it is like to be part of the White House press corps. Earlier this semester Daniela organized an international collaboration between her students in JLMC 476/576 and journalism students at Sofia University, Bulgaria. In other news, Deb's essay, "Dreams Really Do Come True," was featured in the current issue of VISIONS, ISU's alumni magazine, along with her commentary on several stories featured since the magazine's inception. Deb is founding editor of the magazine, which celebrates its 20th anniversary with this issue.
Contact: Debra Gibson, Meredith Apprenticeship Coordinator dsgibson@iastate.edu Lindsay GilbertLindsay Gilbert notes that First Amendment Day resulted in a good success for the Student Services Office. “We had more than 140 registrants for the Greenlee School's sixth annual First Amendment Day student outreach and recruitment event. Approximately 100 attended the march, 120 attended Goodman's lecture and the Feast on the First, and nearly 65 students attended the recruitment panel.” Lindsay also was selected to serve on the College of Liberal Arts and Science's scholarship committee.

We had originally planned on discussing about an hour of material, but it turned into almost two hours of conversation and questions about internships and Jl MC 499. Most students said they would be interested in attending more events like this in the future.”

Additionally, "All ads, all the time: Are we at a tipping point in advertising saturation?" was just published in the book, Issues in American Advertising. “I was also pleased to learn that my materials grant was renewed from the Prosper Foundation for access to a database of consumer media behavior,” he reports. In teaching, Kim McDonough and Newell were awarded a Miller Faculty Fellowship for a project in which we will be connecting Greenlee students on internships with beginning students in the Advertising Principles class. In service, Newell was interviewed by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for an article on product placement, gave the keynote speech to the annual meeting of ISU extension agents, and consulted with a product placement company in San Francisco on their communications campaign. Contact: Jane Peterson, Professor and Associate Director jpeterso@iastate.edu John ThomasJohn Thomas reports the following: “Last week, Tuesday April 8th, gallery room, Memorial Union -- I presented then participated in a panel for CELT on teaching creativity. There were twenty attendees from across the university. A lively discussion, a lot of questions. There seems to be a serious interest on the part of CELT and others to bring more creative opportunities to our student population.” Also, as part of First Amendment Day, Thomas assigned his creative class a sidewalk chalk project. “What I got was quite extraordinary,” he writes. “There were four groups, One group asked students to lay on the sidewalk and then outlined them. This stretched from Curtis to Beardshear, literally dozens of students got involved. Each participant filled in their own outline with (anything and everything). Another group made signs and created cartoon balloons for passersby to write in. The other two groups created large sidewalk chalk displays.”

The guidelines are rigorous and require at least five courses in public relations supplemented by additional courses allied to this field of study. The review includes such areas of study as Introduction to Public Relations, Public Relations Writing and Production, Public Relations Research, Public Relations Strategy and Implementation (e.g. Case Problems, Campaigns Course); Supervised Public Relations Experience (Internship). Guidelines also entail membership and advising benchmarks, among other criteria. Wilgenbusch also notes the new PRSSA leadership for the '08-'09 school year:
