Tom Beel

One week in November was particularly busy for Tom Beell. He was one of three judges to select the district winner of the Voice of Democracy competition conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Nov. 19. The audio essays from area high school students explored the influence veterans have on today’s youth. This is the 20th year Tom has been a local judge of the national contest. Also, on his monthly movie program on the Iowa Public Radio Network Nov. 20, Beell reviewed the latest James Bond film and the influence the long running spy series has had on the action film genre. Then on Nov. 21, Beell presented a Power Point history of Roman Imperial Coins to members of the historic Des Moines Prairie Club. The club was founded in 1890 and has had many of Iowa’s elite as members over the decades.

Michael Bugeja

Michael Bugeja's article, “Clickers and the High Cost of Technology,” was the top accessed story at The Chronicle of Higher Education. He published another essay in the British magazine, The Ecologist. Bugeja notes that he originally titled that piece, “The Culture of Place vs. the Culture of Ideas.” The Brits, having little patience with political correctness, retired Bugeja’s story “Global Village Idiots.” In January, Bugeja also will be honored in a special University library event celebrating the newly published books of Iowa State University faculty. The leadership of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication nominated him for an open seat on the standing committee on Professional Freedom and Responsibility.
