Joel Geske

Joel Geske and former grad student Saras Bellur had an article published in the latest issue of International Journal of Advertising's special issue "Advertising and the Brain" entitled Differences in Brain Information Processing between Print and Computer Screens.

Joel regularly has graduate and undergraduate students work in the Physiomedia Lab. “Here,” he writes, “we are able to measure people's reactions to the media through measuring their brain waves, eye blinks, heart rate or other physical characteristics.” One undergraduate student, Lacy Johnson, took a seminar on “Minds, Media and Messages” and did some testing on various broadcast news packages to see how to get people to remember more of what they view. Joel adds: “Her paper was accepted at an international conference! These are very competitive conferences where many faculty and graduate students strive to get their work recognized, and Lacy did it as a senior!”

Joel also notes that another student, Ryan Bigg, designed a logo for the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication competition in Joel's Visual Communication Lab class. “Ryan took first place nationally,” Joel writes, “and this was a beginning design lab! This is the second time Iowa State has won the competition in the last three years.”

Additionally, Joel reports, Tameka Green and Frank Nelson, students in Joel's Advertising Portfolio Class, placed in the top ten nationally (out of over 800 entries) in the National Yellow Pages Association Competition.

By way of service, Joel has been appointed and confirmed to serve on the Liberal Arts and Science Curriculum Committee.
