Graduate Students

Graduate Steering Committee (Eric Abbott, Lulu Rodriguez, Daniela Dimitrova, Suman Lee) reports these graduate student accomplishments:

Graduate student John Thomas received confirmation from the Creativity in Motion Thatcher Hoffman Smith Prize that his research pre-proposal, titled "Operationalizing McLuhan's Tetrad." has been selected as one of the 50 finalists from a field of over 300 to present a fully developed proposal. The $40,000 biennial prize honoring the creative process was established by Oklahoma University's College of Arts and Sciences in collaboration with Oklahoma City philanthropist Jeanne Hoffman Smith. The prize recognizes the creative process at it unfolds and is expressed by individuals in diverse ways.

Michael Bugeja

Michael Bugeja has been asked to be the undergraduate commencement speaker for the two May 4 ceremonies for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. He also has been asked to give presentations and an address on ethics to the faculty and to the Advisory Board of the School of Human and Consumer Services, Ohio University, April 29-May 2.

Earlier this month Bugeja gave a presentation on enterprise writing at the Iowa Newspaper Association convention. His work on the Interpersonal Divide was featured in several media, including the Christian Science Monitor, Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and the Associated Press.

Another paper on the half-life of Internet footnotes, co-authored with Daniela Dimitrova, was accepted for presentation at the International Communication Association conference in San Francisco.

Bugeja also contributed material about publishing research at the Indiana Wesleyan’s Deans Luncheon. He also had accepted for publication an essay about the social contributions of Martin Luther and Dietrich Bonhoeffer in The Lutheran, the Chicago-based magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

David Bulla

David Bulla has an article titled "Teacher Preparation, Program Strength and Membership in State Scholastic Press Association Enhance Student Press Freedom" in the January 2007 edition of Quill & Scroll. He also will participate in a panel on the black press at AEJMC 2007 in Washington, D.C. He will discuss John Thompson and the Iowa Bystander during World War I.

David also reports that the ISU Chapter of SPJ hosted the first annual Iowa Mid-Winter Conference on Feb. 10 at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. Guest speakers were Al Lewis of the Denver Post; David Yepsen, Ken Fuson and Richard Doak of the Des Moines Register; and Tom Beell and David Saldana of the Greenlee School. Journalism students from three states took part in the conference. The theme was Opinion Writing in an Age of Information.

Dennis Chamberlin

Dennis Chamberlin reports that the Portland Art Museum has acquired four images of his from the recent exhibition of Screen Culture at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, Oregon. Chamberlin joined several other Greenlee faculty in speaking at the ICMA-INA convention in Des Moines.

Daniela Dimitrova

  • Research

    Daniela reports two paper acceptances for ICA:

    The first one is co-authored with director Bugeja and was accepted by the Communication and Technology division; title: Exploring the Use of Online Citations in an Online-Only Journal: A Case Study of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication;

    The second paper analyzed the framing of the Mohammad Cartoons controversy in the Swedish and U.S. elite press, and was co-authored with graduate student Kyung-Sun Lee and two Swedish colleagues; the paper was accepted by the Journalism Studies division.

    Both studies fall in the rubric of new technologies in political communication and have just been submitted to peer-reviewed journals.

    Daniela was also nominated by Dr. Eric Abbott and the awards committee for the university award recognizing early achievements in research.

  • Teaching

    Daniela supervised an independent study for a Ph.D. student in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) graduate program focusing on e-government diffusion around the world.

  • Service

    As Head of the Communication Technology division, Daniela is going to attend the Midwinter AEJMC conference in Reno, Nevada. She will serve as a panel speaker, discussant, and moderator for several panels.

Beth Haag

IABC/Iowa won the Award of Excellence in Financial Management for the 2005-2006 board term, claiming the award for the second-consecutive year. Beth Haag served as chapter treasurer during each of the two years for which IABC/Iowa was recognized for its financial management.

IABC is a worldwide professional communications organization representing more than 14,000 communicators from more than 70 countries. The awards were announced at IABCs Chapter Management Awards reception Jan. 25 during its annual Leadership Institute in San Diego.
