Jay Newell

Jay Newell reports that an article on the assimilation of product placement into the business of advertising, Product Placement Relationships: Proposing Process Models, was provisionally accepted by the International Journal of Advertising, with a targeted publication date of July 2008. The article was co-written with Susan Chang (Frank Magid Associations) and Charles T. Salmon (Michigan State).

In teaching, Jay notes that one of the accreditation goals for graduate programs is to prepare future researchers and business executives to translate social science into public discussion. This semester, Erin Wilgenbusch and Jay Newell worked together to give grad students the opportunity to communicate their research to a wider audience, while providing undergraduate students the chance to practice interviewing, researching and media training. The students in Jay's Advertising Effectiveness grad seminar (JL MC 598) were interviewed by students in Erin's newswriting course (Jl MC 201). In addition, students in Erin's event management class (Jl MC 390B) trained several of Jay's seminar students to communicate their work through a series of mock press conferences, with media representatives from local papers in attendance.

Jay's media saturation research on the spread of cell phones as advertising vehicles was featured in Dave Elbert's Des Moines Register business column on Sunday, November 11. The article quoted extensively from Newell's research on how cell phones are being transformed from interpersonal communication devices to marketing machines.
