Good News Concerning:


Jeff Blevins

On Nov. 2, Jeff Blevins will make an invited presentation to the graduate student colloquium at Ohio University's School of Telecommunications. His presentation, "The Political Economy of U.S. Broadcast Ownership Regulation and Free Speech after the Telecommunications Act of 1996," is based on a recent study that is scheduled to appear in the next issue of Democratic Communiqué.

Jeff also accepted an invitation to present a paper at the Oxford Round Table under the theme, "The Regulation of Cyberspace: Balancing the Interests." The Round Table is held each year at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. Barbara Mack participated in this prestigious event in 2004.

For the 2007-08 school year, Jeff also is an affiliate faculty member of the Institute for Science & Society here at Iowa State University.

Michael Bugeja

Michael Bugeja reports the following:

  • Michael's and Jane Peterson's research on newspaper corrections was the basis of a news item in Autumn 2007 edition of The Wilson Quarterly.

  • Two peer-reviewed articles on footnote research with co-author Daniela Dimitrova in Journalism and Mass Communication Educator and New Media & Society.

  • Articles in the Chronicle on Second Life (Sept. 14 and one upcoming on Nov. 12) will be the focus of a university symposium November 15 at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room. Invited guests include Barbara Mack, Jim Oliver, Brian Mennecke, Steffen Schmidt, Carla Espinoza and Paul Tanaka. LAS Dean Michael Whiteford will serve as host and moderator.

  • His essay, "Writing Deep," will appear in Contemporary Literary Criticism, Volume 251, 2008, by Gale Research.

  • Keynote, ISU Extension, "Interpersonal Divide."

  • Interviews with Des Moines Register and other media, broadcast and print, on interpersonal divide and media ethics.

Daniela Dimitrova

Daniela Dimitrova reports contributions in research, teaching and service:

Research

Daniela and Michael just had two peer-reviewed articles on the half-life research published in top journals:

  • Dimitrova, D. V., & Bugeja, M. (2007, October). The half-life of Internet references cited in communication journals, New Media & Society, 9(5), 811-826.
  • Bugeja, M. & Dimitrova, D. V. (2007). Reconsider the source: Implications of vanishing online citations in communication journals, Journalism & Mass Communication Educator, 62(2), 212-218.

Daniela and Michael were also contacted by a book editor from Chandos Publishing (Oxford, England) and asked to write a book on their half-life research. They are discussing the pros and cons of such an undertaking at the moment.

Daniela also reports that she has an upcoming book chapter (co-authored with Yu-Che Chen):

  • "Online civic engagement via government Web portals" to be published in Advances in E-Government Research, IDEA Publishing.

Teaching

This semester Daniela is using some new innovative techniques in the classroom. Her undergraduate class in Multimedia Production is working on a real-world project with a local restaurant located in Des Moines/Ankeny. Her graduate students in Communication Technology and Social Change are using a blog to enhance class discussion (http://jlmc574.blogspot.com/ ). They are also scheduled to visit the Virtual Reality cave (C-4) on campus and see various demos.

Service

Daniela was invited to attend a reception for Senator Clinton who gave a lecture at Iowa State University on Oct. 24. Daniela continues to serve on School and University committees and is an active member of the current Greenlee Search committee.

Suman Lee

Suman Lee reports two more publications:

  • Lee, S., & Rodriguez, L. "The four publics of anti-bioterrorism information campaigns: A test of the situational theory" was accepted for publication for Public Relations Review.
  • Suman Lee was invited to contribute a book chapter titled "International public relations" In W. F. Eadie & G. M. Broom, 21th Century communication: A reference handbook. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.

Jay Newell

Jay Newell's media saturation research has resulted in a publication about individual criteria for the acceptance or rejection of cell phone advertising. It will appear in December's International Journal of Mobile Marketing. "With apologies to Madonna," Jay writes, "the article is titled 'Desperately seeking opt-in: A field report from a student-led mobile marketing program.' "

Jay notes that cell phone advertising is expected to grow into a multi-billion dollar ad market. In this research he also with the ISU Daily on its just-launched mobile marketing initiative.

In teaching, Jay's Ad Principles class has been visited by faculty from statistics, anthropology and geology. He's also participating in the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching's Large Class Learning Community. "We're evaluating each other's teaching approach with class visits," he notes.

In service, Jay was interviewed by the CNN Money website and CNN Radio about the potential effectiveness of Al Gore's recently announced $100 million ad campaign to combat global climate change. Jay also joined colleagues in advertising in reviewing papers for the upcoming American Academy of Advertising conference.

Prior-Miller

Marcia Prior-Miller served on the Oct. 14-17, 2007, ACEJMC accreditation site visit team to the School of Journalism at Michigan State University, in East Lansing. She also served on the Visitors Committee (advisory council) for the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas, Oct. 18-21, 2007. She was appointed chair for the 2008 Visitors Committee.

Dave Saldana

Dave Saldana's recent commentary for Iowa Public Radio, a Constitutional analysis of the recent gay marriage decision and the media's and public's response to it, received significant listener response, including a request by the ACLU of Iowa to republish it in its entirety in its magazine.

Erin Wilgenbusch

Erin Wilgenbusch makes the following report:

  • PRSSA's Denim Drive: We have collected nearly 1000 pieces of denim thus far and we'll continue to collect until Nov. 1. We have had a number of area schools and a few businesses in Des Moines set up collection sites as a result of the story KCCI ran. Catherine Perkins from WOI also did a noon radiio interview with our Cotton, Incorporated representative, Andrea Samber. KCCI has contacted us about doing a second, follow-up story and the Daily has run three stories.

  • Students Ben Day and Marjorie Smith attended the PRSSA National Convention in Philadelphia this month. The Central Iowa PRSA Chapter in Des Moines paid for these students' registration fee as a part of their support of our chapter.

  • The Bateman teams are in place and have begun work on their campaign for Chevrolet's Safe Kids Buckle Up initiative.

  • Erin did a book review of Wilcox's Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques 5th edition as the publisher, Allyn and Bacon, prepares for a 6th edition. Also, she served as one of the judges for the Cardinal Court (Homecoming King and Queen) scholarship at the request of the Student Alumni Leadership Council.
