Two advisory council members to retire
Two Greenlee School Advisory Council members recently announced plans to retire
from professional positions this year.
Deanna Sands, the newest member of the Greenlee School Advisory
Council, announced her retirement as managing editor of the
Omaha World-Herald.
Sands, who earned an M.S. in journalism and mass communication
(agriculture) in 1974 at Iowa State University, was named to
the council last year.
She is the current president of the Associated Press Managing
Editors Foundation and is president of the Nebraska Affiliate
of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“After 35 years in journalism, I'm fortunate that I can engage
with my state and community in a different way now,” Sands
said. “Newspaper journalism was very good to me. I hope that
I returned the favor.”
Louis M. Thompson, Jr. will retire as president and CEO of
the National Investor Relations Institute (NIRI), a position
he has held since 1982.
Thompson is a nationally recognized expert in corporate disclosure
and governance and a long-time advocate of the investor relations
officer’s role with corporate boards of directors.
Thompson is vice chairman of the Greenlee School Advisory Council
and serves on the Dean’s Council for ISU's College of Liberal
Arts and Sciences.
He received a B.S. in agricultural journalism from Iowa State
in 1961 and an M.S. in journalism and mass communication (agriculture)
in 1969.
In 2001, Thompson received the Greenlee School’s Schwartz Award
for Distinguished Service in Journalism and Communication.
Thompson plans to begin a second career in the investor relations
profession. At NIRI, he wrote extensively on investor relations,
governance and regulatory issues, and was recognized as a leader
in the field.
