Greenlee School students selected for Meredith Apprenticeship ProgramFive new Greenlee School students have been selected for the 2005-2006 Meredith Apprenticeship Program (MAP). The program is in its second year at the School. The apprentices will begin working 15-hour weeks at Meredith Corp. in September. They also will attend weekly hour-long seminars on campus to provide academic support and will meet weekly with MAP Coordinator Deb Gibson at Meredith. Gibson, a Greenlee School clinician, said Meredith apprentices are given many of the same responsibilities as full-time employees of the media and marketing company. The students will research articles, interview sources, write articles, proofread, assist with photo shoots and manage entire projects. The following journalism and mass communication majors were selected to be Meredith apprentices: Senior Lindsay Brantner will work with Successful Farming magazine. Brantner is minoring in agriculture education and history. She is interning this summer at Wallaces Farmer magazine, and she also has worked at the Adams County Free Press, the Taylor County Extension Office and the Iowa State Daily. Brantner is a member of Iowa State’s Agriculture Education Club, the Beginning Farmers Network and the Farm Operations Club, and she was a 4-H member for 11 years. She hails from Lenox, where she still maintains a cattle herd (10 cows, one bull) that she started up in third grade. Senior Sheena Chihak will work with the Books Group, in the areas of food and children's books. Chihak is also majoring in dietetics. She grew up in Cedar Rapids, writes for the Iowa State Daily and is president-elect of Orchesis, the university's student dance organization. Senior Abby Penning will work with Country Home magazine. Penning is minoring in English. She is from LeMars and has reported, written and edited for the Iowa State Daily and Ethos magazine. Senior Jenny Stanley will work with the special interest publications Building and Remodeling, particularly Do It Yourself. Stanley has been selected for a summer internship with Building and Remodeling, beginning May 23, so her apprenticeship will be a yearlong Meredith experience. She is from Adel and is minoring in English. She has worked as both a writer and an editor of Ethos magazine. The MAP application process for the 2006-07 academic year will begin in February. At that time, the current apprentices will visit journalism classes to discuss the program, and an informational seminar will be held. Applications will be screened in March and final matches will be made upon receipt of Meredith assignments in April.
