PRSSA's rock-a-thon promotes organ donationBy Emily OliverPRSSA President Students will be ‘rocking out’ at Iowa State University on April 20 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Union Terrace to promote organ donation awareness and family discussions about this choice. Members of the 2005 National Organ Donor Awareness Competition (NODAC) team will rock in rocking chairs for three hours to promote their “Give a Little Bit” organ donation campaign. A disc jockey will be at the event providing musical entertainment. The sketch comedy troupe Grandma Mojo’s Moonshine Revival will perform that evening on behalf of the National Organ Donor Awareness Day. The performance is from 10 p.m. – midnight at the Maintenance Shop in the Memorial Union. Organ donation cards, informational brochures and green bracelets will be distributed to students on campus throughout the day and evening. Performers, volunteers and supporters of National Organ Donor Awareness Day will be wearing T-shirts supporting the cause. There are approximately 370 Iowans who are on a waiting list to receive organs, and 106 people are added daily to the national organ donor waiting list. There are nearly 13,275 people who are considered organ donors, but having it listed on a driver's license isn’t enough. People must share their decision with their family and friends to ensure their wishes are honored. NODAC is an annual event that is sponsored by the Rowan University's chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA). PRSSA is a pre-professional society that has more than 8,000 student members nationwide. The organization allows students to learn more about the field of public relations through professional development sessions and networking with professionals. The Iowa State University Chapter of PRSSA currently has 70 members and has been nationally honored for their participation in national competitions. The Iowa State PRSSA took first place in the NOCAC competition in 2002 and took third place in 2004.
