Noted public relations alumnus Gaylin Morgan dies

Greenlee Advisory Council member Gaylin Morgan, co-founder of Morgan&Myers, passed away on Jan. 22.

Morgan, born in Cedar Falls in 1938, retired eight years ago as president of the firm, one of the largest in Wisconsin.

According to a news release by Morgan&Myers, which can be accessed at http://www.morganmyers.com/morgan_text.htm, Morgan formed Gaylin F. Morgan & Associates in Wauwatosa, Wis., in 1973 and moved the firm to Jefferson County, Wis. in 1976.

In 1982, he co-founded Morgan&Myers specializing in agricultural accounts. Under Morgan’s leadership his company expanded with a Minneapolis office and new focus on the food industry, serving such clients as General Mills, Kraft Foods and Altria Group Inc.

Advisory Council Chair Bill Monroe said, “Gaylin was a major influence on the Council. His passion for the Greenlee School was exemplary, and he will be missed.”

Monroe added that Morgan wanted to ensure that public relations students were prepared for the workplace with significant practical experience.

“This was a constant theme,” Monroe recalled, “and he emphasized it often.”

Greenlee Director Michael Bugeja said Morgan’s focus on the importance of practice will endure, not only in public relations, but across emphases.

Former journalism Chair Tom Emmerson wrote in an email that Morgan “was at home with everyone. His engaging personality was matched by a raucous sense of humor and, even mischief.

"He also had great street smarts and excellent antenna, which served him in spades as a public relations practitioner and executive.”

Along with his family, Emmerson noted, “Gaylin's two main loves were Morgan&Myers and Iowa State. He bled cardinal and gold, generally, and journalism especially.”

Morgan, a 1962 graduate, was a member of the Order of the Knoll, the largest and most prestigious donor designation at Iowa State.

A feature story, “NAMA Names Gaylin Morgan ‘Ag Communicator of the Year,’” can be found on p. 37 of the 1998 Greenlee School Newsletter.

He is survived by his wife, Carol, a son, Curtis, two daughters, Kimberly and Gaylee, and granddaughter Eleanor Ruszczyk.

Visitation will be held between 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27 at the Schneider-Michaelis Funeral Home, Jefferson, Wis. An additional visitation will be held at 10 a.m., prior to funeral services at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 28 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jefferson.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Morgan & Myers Scholarship Fund at the Iowa State University Foundation, 2505 Elwood Dr., Ames, Iowa 50010-8644.
