Publicist for Elizabeth Smart Case speaks at ISUThe senior publicist for the Elizabeth Smart family, Chris Thomas, spoke Feb. 17 in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union. Thomas’ presentation focused on crisis communication and his efforts to bring Elizabeth Smart home safely. Thomas is the owner of The Intrepid Group, a public relations firm in Salt Lake City, Utah. He has been involved with dozens of crisis communication efforts for large international corporations and non-profit organizations. His most high profile work was for the Elizabeth Smart family, in which he organized protocol to establish order with a demanding group of journalists, developed and executed a resolution plan and handled the media upon Elizabeth’s rescue. Thomas worked with the family for 11 months and logged more than 10,000 media calls. He was interviewed by The New York Times and Newsweek, and made appearances on the Today Show, Good Morning America and Entertainment Tonight. Thomas was depicted in the related CBS mini series "The Elizabeth Smart Story" and was also recognized as one of the nation’s top crisis communicators by PBI Media in 2003. The event was sponsored by the Iowa State Chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America, the Central Iowa Chapter of Public Relations Society of America, the Committee on Lectures and the Greenlee School.
