Abbott shares field notes from Uganda
Greenlee Professor Eric Abbott, back from a December trip to Uganda, is sharing his field notes concerning his part in Iowa State’s Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (SRL) program. Greenlee Director Michael Bugeja notes that Abbott’s involvement showcases the Greenlee School’s commitment to service at home and abroad. "I recommend that students, faculty and administrators read these notes,” Bugeja said, “because they document the work of a scholar for an initiative that ultimately will benefit thousands in developing nations.”
Abbott is part of Iowa State’s initiative, which includes a $10 million gift to help developing nations address rural hunger and poverty. Benefactors Gerald A. and Karen A. Kolschowsky of Oak Brook, Ill., and the Gerald A. and Karen A. Kolschowsky Foundation Inc. of Aurora, Ill., support the SRL program, which fosters “collaborations with partners in developing nations to find sustainable solutions that improve the agriculture, nutrition, health and economic opportunities of rural communities,” according to an Iowa State News Service release.
Abbott also has been researching possibilities of involving the Greenlee School’s communication experts in this worldwide initiative. "I have been working over the past 60 days as a member of teams developing research proposals for more than $11 million,” he notes. “Some of that, I hope, will come directly to the Greenlee School, if funded.” For more information, check out another Greenlee News story, "Abbott visits Uganda."
