Advrt major is 'Most Promising Minority Student'
Greenlee senior Kim Ahrens was named in December one of the most promising minority students by the American Advertising Federation. Ahrens, who is double majoring in advertising and graphic design, represented Iowa State Feb. 8-10 in New York City for face-to-face meetings with top advertising industry executives. The AAF's "Most Promising Minority Students" program selects students based on grade point average and outstanding achievement. Ahrens joined 40 students from such programs as Ohio University, Howard University, Penn State and the University of Minnesota. Ahrens, who is from Bettendorf, and the other honorees were featured in issues of Advertising Age magazine and USA Today. She was nominated by Assistant Professor Jay Newell. In his nomination letter, Newell highlighted Ahrens's work in Advrt 434 Advertising Campaigns, a capstone class, in which she worked with executives of the E.W. Scripps Networks to create an identity plan for the DIY Network, a new television channel reaching 30 million homes. Newell praised Ahrens for her ability to "...cut to the core of the problem and arrive at elegant and effective solutions." The AAF Foundation and AAF’s Mosaic Center on Multiculturalism program is the premier advertising industry award program recognizing and recruiting outstanding minority college graduates in advertising, marketing, media and communications. The AAF Web site says the program “connects the advertising industry with the nation’s top minority college seniors. This premier event provides opportunities to recruit fresh talent, to further prepare advertising’s best young prospects and to help the industry's workforce better reflect the multiculturalism of today's society.” Please visit the AAF Web site for more information about this competition.
