The Greenlee Web Team visited Meredith Corp. in Des Moines on Oct. 7. The group included Assistant Professor Daniela Dimitrova, Lecturer and Web Team Adviser Jody Graden, Katie Lund, Web Team President Jessica Plymesser, Robert Sanford, Web Team Vice President Kelsey Ehlers, Erin Magnani, Greenlee School Librarian and Web Team Adviser Dru Frykberg, and host David Kurns, who is editor in chief of interactive media for Meredith. |
Greenlee School Web Team members learned about interactive
media at Meredith Corp. while visiting the Des Moines-based
publishing company October 7.
According to Meredith ’s Web site, “Interactive media's goal is to provide our online customers with a high quality
interactive experience, extend the company's reach in the digital
universe, efficiently market Meredith's magazines and products, and
provide advertisers and business partners with unique opportunities
to effectively market relevant products and services.”
David Kurns, editor in chief of interactive media for Meredith, explained how important it is to integrate each of the four major departments of interactive media into a successful team.
“Communication is important,” he said.

The editorial staff, graphic designers, technical experts and marketing team all must work smoothly together to meet audience expectations for interactive Web sites like Ladies’ Home Journal and American Baby.
Kurns said Web users are not afraid to speak
up about what they want. Visitors will let the interactive
media team know if they want changes made to a particular Web
site. That is why Kurns and his staff are continually thinking
about ways to improve the Web sites they design and maintain.
Computer programs track Web site traffic to determine how visitors
navigate through the sites.
Graphic designers work with the
technical department to create interactive media like Try-a-Hairstyle
on the Ladies’ Home Journal site after the marketing team discovers that “hair” is a popular search term.
Having an MBA is something that Kurns said would be beneficial
for students wanting to move up in the publishing world. To
be successful in this type of environment, business skills
go hand-and-hand with design, editorial and marketing skills,
he said.
