Greenlee students form ISU magazine clubIowa State students interested in magazine writing and editing will have a new opportunity to develop their craft. The ISU Magazine Club, whose founding was initiated by junior Michelle Kalkhoff and other journalism and mass communication students, hopes to include all students interested in magazine journalism. The club will offer creative and instructional sessions, provide students with additional resources for effective magazine production and promote networking among students, professors, editors, freelance writers and other magazine professionals. The group will meet monthly to discuss writing and editing techniques, analyze quality writing and give students the tools to start freelance writing. “We are pleased to see students take the lead in organizing the ISU Magazine Club,” said Greenlee School Director Michael Bugeja. He added that interest in magazine journalism has increased with the recent remodeling of the magazine center by the Meredith Corp. The publishing company also provides apprenticeships coordinated by Associate Professor Marcia Prior-Miller and Professional-in-Residence Deb Gibson. Bugeja said the club will help prepare students to take advantage of internships and other related activities. Already the club has scheduled a speaker for its Oct. 17 meeting. Debra Steilen, a building and remodeling editor with Meredith's special interest publications, has agreed to talk about what editors want and need from student interns. All students are invited to attend the first meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12 in Hamilton Hall 169. Bugeja will be the guest speaker. Pizza will also be provided.
