Greenlee School distributes poster supporting education and free speechBy Michael Bugeja Support of education is as important as free speech because you cant have one without the other in a republic, according to a First Amendment poster being distributed by the Greenlee School. The poster, to appear as an insert in the 2004 Iowa Newspaper Association Directory, was designed by Associate Professor Lulu Rodriguez. It celebrates the land-grant legacy of access at Iowa State University and the Greenlee Schools upcoming centennial commemoration in 2005. The poster recounts the history of educational access and free speech, fundamental to a republic. The document also notes: "Iowa State University, a land grant institution, provides access in the historic sense of the word. Educators at the Greenlee School embrace their role as well, training a new generation of journalists to safeguard our rights in the voting booth and in society. Our tools may change but our mission remains the samein the classroom, the newsroom and the Bill of Rights. Support education. Support freedom of the press." In an open letter to newspaper editors, also to be published in the INA directory, Director Michael Bugeja notes that Thomas Jefferson wrote that he would prefer newspapers without government rather than government without newspapers. Then Jefferson wrote: "But I should mean that every man should receive those newspapers and be capable of reading them," Bugeja observed. Bugeja's open letter continues, "When you support education, you support the First Amendment. You cant have one without the other." The 2004 Iowa Newspaper Directory reaches 323 newspapers and is distributed to more than 2,000 advertising agencies and organizations. INA clients will be able to reprint the poster celebrating Iowa State, Greenlees centennial, and access to education and free speech. The Greenlee School has "placed a very capturing message, and I feel it will definitely stand out to everyone who receives the directory," said Heather Basofin of the Iowa Newspaper Association. The 2004 directory will be available in October.
