Director revises How-To News WriterBy Trent Nusbaum A booklet on news writing authored by Greenlee School Director Michael Bugeja has been redistributed.
In 1985, Bugeja wrote “How-To News Writer: 25 Ways to Develop Reporting and Writing Skills,” which he updated and, with the help of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation, redistributed last year with a new cover. The booklet provides guidelines for journalists to follow when news writing. How to interview, write a lead and recognize First Amendment rights are just a few of the essentials covered. Arvid Huisman, executive director of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation says, “…it presents a wealth of information in such a straightforward and easy-to-use manner.” The booklet just went on sale, but as of March 3, 83 copies had been sold. The booklet will be distributed nationwide to state newspaper associations and colleges. It will also be available through Barnes & Noble Booksellers. The royalties from the booklet are being divided between Bugeja, who will donate his share to First Amendment scholarship and programming at the Greenlee School, and the Iowa Newspaper Foundation, which will use its share to help educate professionals in the state. A DVD will also be created, incorporating Bugeja's lectures on each chapter. Copies are available from the Iowa Newspaper Foundation at $14.99 each plus shipping and handling. If interested, please call Arvid Huisman at 515-244-2145, Ext.132 or send an email to inf@inanews.com.
