Assistant professor Suman Lee.

“Ames is a nice, safe place to live,” said Suman Lee, a new assistant professor at the Greenlee School.

Lee, who is from South Korea, is part of the public relations faculty. This semester he is teaching Advrt/Jl MC 301 Strategic Planning for Advertising and Public Relations and Jl MC 424/524 Public Relations Campaigns.

Lee worked for the Samsung Co. 15 years before deciding to come to the United States to earn a master’s degree from San Diego State University and a Ph.D. in mass communications from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Ames is a much smaller and quieter place than Lee is used to.

“You don’t have to worry about walking places after dark,” he said. It’s a nice town that Lee and his wife feel comfortable in, plus he said it’s great that most of the people you run into are associated with the university in some way.

The Greenlee School is about half the size of the Newhouse School.

“You can build a lot of personal relationships with the faculty and students with a school of this size,” he said. Lee said he believes this school has a friendlier and family-like atmosphere.

Although Lee is not currently involved in any student organizations, he is interested in working with Iowa State student members of the Public Relations Society of America.

He is especially interested in research.

One of his Lee’s teaching goals is to show students the differences between advertising and public relations.

“It is important to know how closely the two work together in a professional setting.”
