Ad Club tours Minneapolis agencies

The Iowa State Advertising Club took 20 students on its annual trip this year to Minneapolis.

The tour began Nov. 14 with a trip to Periscope, an agency specializing in creative jobs, but that also offers account services and media work.

Periscope's clients include Target Corp., Lincoln Financial, Arctic Cat, Cox Business Services, Golf Galaxy and Kemps.

Iowa State alumna Katie Rust and Eugene Fuller took club members on a tour and explained how to get into the advertising industry.

The Ad Club then went to Martin/Williams where Iowa State alumna and past Ad Club President Sarah Summy provided a tour and a Q&A session for club members.

The Martin/Williams building was under construction so the Ad Club took a short tour and talked to some people that were hard at work.

The Q&A session included a creative director, account service director, media buyer, a human resource coordinator and others.

Ad Club members asked questions about the advertising industry, salaries and other random questions. The internship coordinator also explained the new internship program called Velocity. A few people also got the chance to submit resumes.

The next agency Ad Club members toured was Colle+McVoy. This agency is marketed as a fully integrated marketing agency. They have an intricate direct marketing area and full-service creative, media and account group.

Vince Kalt and ISU graduate Anne Strong took the Ad Club on a tour of the agency and explained the many components that make up the agency.

A Q&A session was also set up at Colle+McVoy. The creative director, media director, and account service supervisor talked about what they do at their jobs and answered student questions.

After the agency tours, most of the students went to the Mall of America for some fun and R&R. The trip was very informative and gave a great view of life at an advertising agency. Students said it was a tremendous experience and they would love to go again.
