A historical look at the Greenlee School

On May 30, 1905, Iowa State University began Iowa's first and one of the nation's first journalism programs. We are now well into our 97th year!

In 1948, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications began a national accredication process for journalism programs amoung colleges and universities. We are the only journalism program in Iowa to have a continuous record of 54 years of accrediation, beginning when the council was founded.

In recognition of a gift of $9 million from ISU alumni Robert and Diane Greenlee of Boulder, Colorado, on May 20, 1998, the Department was named the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication. The Greenlees' gift is the largest ever given to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

The Greenlee School is the largest and most comprehensive accredited journalism and mass communication program in the state of Iowa. In the 2002 fall semester there were 1,050 undergraduate pre-majors and majors, 30 grad students, 22 faculty members and 5 members of the professional and scientific staff.

Courses of study within the school include newspaper, magazine, electronic media studies, science communication, public relations, advertising, visual communication, organizational communcaiton, and intercultural communication.

Robert and Diane Greenlee were presented with sweatshirts at the 1998 ceremony announcing the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication.

Inquiries from students concerning our undergraduate and master's programs are most welcome. And, if you are an alum, please e-mail us for a "Cyber Homecoming!"
