September 2009 Internship Spotlight
Name: Vanessa Philogene Duties: My responsibilities at KDSM were far from the average intern’s responsibility. From day one, I was put to work on a commercial that was going to be aired. I worked closely with two assistant producers on writing scripts, shooting, video editing and producing. I also assisted with other in house productions like Metro Most Wanted, the Better Business News Journal show, and Next Generation Realty Show. Most Memorable Experience: The first time I was left alone to work on a commercial one of the assistant producers called it “My Baby.” It was a powerful moment for me because I felt trusted and valued. The edits were my decision from beginning to end. I called all the shots. My supervisor told me that I did an impressive work. When I saw it on television, I felt really great. I realized that thousands of people were watching my work. That really touched my heart and gave me a sense of self-confidence in my work. Special Contribution: As a person of color, I am very sensitive and passionate about diversity. As I became more comfortable with the assistant producers, race issues had become a daily part of our conversations. Close to the end of my internship, Eric decided to create the most diverse commercial that I had ever seen him create. It was a multicultural production from start to finish. When another employee saw the commercial, she applauded us for creating something different from the norm. Advice to Future Interns: When I asked Brooke, my supervisor, why she hired me, she said it was because of my fun and positive attitude. She knew that I would come to work wanting to learn. Having professional experience is always a plus, but experience with a negative attitude will get you nowhere. You should also make sure that you take classes in addition to your required courses. Before my internship I was not aware that they used Photoshop in the television industry. Thankfully, I took a Photoshop class prior to the internship. That class was helpful in getting some tasks done. Keep in mind that in the long run, it will be a great benefit to you because it’s another skill that may make you a better choice than someone else applying for the same job. As Ross mentioned in the previous spotlight, the more skills you have, the more marketable you’ll be. |
