July 2009 Internship Spotlight
Name: Jessi Pierce Duties: While at FSN I started with basic, generic intern duties. I would work game nights/days many Minnesota and Wisconsin sports; the Timberwolves, Bucks, Brewers, Gophers, Wild, and Twins, which included helping with cameras in the studio, running the prompter, setting up mics on talent, and helping with clipping the live game to be used for post game highlights. I also helped with logging game melts for the aforementioned sports. Most Memorable Experience: Going to the media exclusive Vikings mini-camps for three days was the highlight of my internship. I felt like a real journalist, mixing in with ESPN and local news reporters — seeking interviews with players like Adrian Peterson, and the former Iowa State QB Sage Rosenfelths. It allowed me to showcase my journalism talent, although it took me a awhile to work up the nerve to interview players that I never thought I would meet in person! Also while at the mini camps, I was able to get some stand ups done on camera. It was the thrill of a lifetime and helped me increase the confidence I need to be in this industry. Special Contribution: While at FSN, I made myself available to help with any extra projects necessary (which my supervisor loved). I helped out with player interviews for the Twins and Wild, went on Vikings Shoots and assisted with the writing of Vikings Weekly, and even trained the new interns. Advice to Future Interns: Put yourself out there at an internship and get what you want out of it. The tasks I was assigned were simple and not what I had hoped for, so I searched for other opportunities around the office that better fit what I wanted to gain from the internship. Don't just do what needs to be done to get by; make your self available and memorable to your supervisors and peers and it will help better your chances of a career in the future. |
