Job & Internship

March 2009 Internship Spotlight

JOrdan Lampe

Name: Jordan Lampe
Major: Journalism
Company: U.S. Department of State, Vienna Embassy

Duties: As an intern for the U.S. Embassy, I had the privilege of assisting in numerous tasks intended to bolster international relations with Austria. By helping manage cultural events, drafting letters on behalf of the Ambassador, writing memos, creating presentations, and researching foreign policy initiatives I was able to make an impact on a global level.

Most Memorable Experience: Most memorable internship experience: One of the benefits of interning during the final stretch of the presidential election was the large amount of requests for embassy sponsored presentations. Many schools were confused and wanted help understanding our nation's complicated electoral process and two-party system (Europe uses a multiparty system). In total, I gave about 10 to 12 presentations to local schools about the election. It was a blast to discuss my nation's democracy with large groups of engaged 16 to 18-year old students.

Special Contribution: I had many duties as the section's intern, but one in particular was extremely time-consuming. In an effort to reduce the time spent on the task, I proactively undertook a small project intended to streamline a correspondence method. However, what started out as a small project quickly turned into a complete overhaul of the Public Affair's database system. To get everyone onboard, I had to make a practical and persuasive argument in front of my entire section. Believe me change in government is not easy, but in this rare case it worked. The system is still in place 3 months later and is working great!

Advice to Future Interns: Don't ever sell yourself short. Extracurricular activities, good grades, and great communication skills can really distance you from even famous Ivy League candidates. We go to school at a great college in a state known for its integrity and work ethic. Right now, a lot of companies are looking for those qualities so don't be afraid to highlight them.
