December Internship Spotlight
Name: Kelli Corcoran Duties: This summer, I helped in several areas of the marketing department at Maxim. I was lucky enough to not have to focus on one area of marketing. Instead, I was given the opportunity to work where I was needed. The art director allowed me to see what went into the production of a customized ad, otherwise known as an advertorial. I also helped at a photo shoot for an up-and-coming band sponsored by Southern Comfort. Since Southern Comfort was the core advertiser, I was able to work with some product placement, and I saw behind the scenes of a photo shoot. Maxim is known for its A-list celebrity parties. It was really exciting to see everything that goes into producing parties for celebrities. One of the parties I attended this summer actually landed front page of the New York Post. I've learned the art of event planning is extremely difficult and high stress. Finally, my main supervisor was the associate director of merchandising. With her direction, I was given the opportunity to see what went into building a solid proposal for a client. She was extremely inspirational to me because at the age of 27, she was traveling the nation and pitching ideas to fortune 500 companies. Most Memorable Experience: My favorite experience was attending a Maxim Event at Marquee nightclub. It was crazy to see a red carpet and the paparazzi. Special Contribution: One of my proudest moments was when I proposed an idea to my supervisor for Jeep Liberty. Not only did she love my idea, but also sent my proposal to the Detroit Manager, and he presented it to the client. It's really exciting to know that something you created could possibly be published in a national magazine. Advice to Future Interns: I feel like most people in the field of communication have one thing in common: we enjoy communicating. Use that skill to your benefit. I wouldn't have had this opportunity if I hadn't personally called Maxim. I constantly kept in touch with the professionals at Maxim and showed them the enthusiasm I had for their company. New York employers love Midwest interns because of our strong work ethic. Just because you're from Iowa doesn't mean you can't aspire to be the next big thing. New York City is a great starting point for any intern wishing to make it big. |
