October Internship Spotlight
Name: Amber Saunders Duties: This summer I was a copy desk intern with the Omaha World-Herald. During my internship, I assisted the rim editors in editing stories. This included writing headlines and cutlines to accompany the stories, fact-checking, cleaning up grammar and checking for consistency with the World-Herald's style and Associated Press style. Most Memorable Experience: My most memorable experience was my last day at the World-Herald. About half the people that worked on the desk that day brought treats and a few gave me plastic storage containers (someone had eaten my sandwich a few weeks earlier and I had put up a note asking for my container back). There was a lot of camaraderie on the desk, which made my experience there more enjoyable. Special Contribution: After my first few weeks at the World-Herald, I was in charge of editing an advertorial section that ran once a week. No one else wanted to do it, so they appreciated my willingness to edit it the last eight or nine weeks I was there. Advice to Future Interns: Get involved in campus media as early as possible. Although you may not be thinking about internships as a freshman, you should be preparing yourself for them. It's a lot easier to get a good internship if you have related experience at the Daily, ISUtv, Ethos, etc. Once you are an intern, don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how stupid you think they sound. Sometimes they'll forget to tell you something. The editor in charge of training the interns was out sick when we arrived, and in the editors' scramble to rearrange schedules and train us, no one remembered to show us how to use the phones. Also, make sure you hang on to copies of projects you worked on. It will be a lot easier to make a portfolio later if you don't have to search for clips. |
