February Internship Spotlight
Duties: As a communications intern, my main duty was writing for Hy-Vee's in-house magazine. This magazine is distributed each month to all Hy-Vee employee's. I spent a vast majority of my time interviewing for stories, reading mail that employee's would submit and taking photos of everything from new employees to special events. Most Memorable Experience: One day at an awards banquet I had the opportunity to spend an hour visiting with the CEO, an Iowa State alum, about my future and just about Iowa State in general. He shared with me his fondness of the school and some of his favorite memories. Therefore after, every time I would see him, he would greet me by name. I was really grateful that I had this experience to meet such an influential person and get the chance to make a lasting impression. Special Contribution: I was thoroughly surprised throughout the experience with how much responsibility I was given. I contributed to most of the magazine and was also in charge of creating presentations to be shown in front of hundreds of leaders in the company. Advice to Future Interns: Start your search early and know the company well. Walk into your interview with the attitude that none deserves this position more than you. Make sure that not only are you working for a company you like but that you like what you do! I considered myself lucky to go to work each day and looked forward to the next. Take as much as you can get from the opportunity--you can't put a price on experience. |
