Job & Internship

January Internship Spotlight

Katie Piepel

Name: Katie Piepel
Major: Jl MC
Emphasis: Magazine
Company: Paste Magazine in Decatur, GA

Duties: As an editorial intern at Paste, I was able to contribute to almost every aspect of the magazine. My tasks included reporting, writing and editing music stories for both the magazine and the web site, setting up magazine subscriptions, corresponding with writers and publicists, maintaining the web site by uploading new copy and images, writing music news briefs for the web site on a daily basis, assisting the editors on projects, organizing the CD library and assessing the huge amount of CDs Paste received each day.

Most Memorable Experience: Because Paste is a music and pop culture magazine, it wasn’t uncommon to have spontaneous concerts in the break room. Over the summer, a variety of musicians stopped by the office to perform for the staff. Also, getting published in the magazine was a huge accomplishment for me.

Special Contribution: I was incredibly surprised by the amount of responsibility I was given at Paste. I contributed to all aspects of the magazine, including brainstorming new story ideas, writing, fact-checking, editing, finding images, etc. I was also able to contribute various pieces to the web site such as concert reviews, CD reviews and band profiles.

Advice to Future Interns: My advice is to start your search very early, try to get an internship out of Iowa and don’t be scared to go for your dream position. I took a chance at applying to my favorite magazine and actually ended up with the internship!
