December Internship Spotlight
Duties: My job duties at KCCI were different every week. Sometimes I would help the producers write stories or VOSOT’s for upcoming shows, and another week I would go out with reporters and practice doing stand ups, editing and writing packages. The versatility that each day offered was one aspect of this internship that made it so interesting and mind expanding. Most Memorable Experience: I got to experience and see a lot of neat things during my internship, but I have to say that my most memorable experiences were helping with the Democratic primary election and RAGBRAI. For the primary election night, each reporter covering a candidate had an intern go with them. I had a headset on and was on the phone for each newscast with the news director to let him know when the reporter was ready to go on the air, who they would be interviewing, and if any other important news was about to happen. It felt great to be helping out with such a big event and to be a part of making the newscasts come alive. RAGBRAI was also a blast. Each reporter was assigned a certain day to cover the events and I went with a reporter and photographer the day they went to Newton. They were constantly doing live shots so it was quite the adrenaline rush to help with these and keep things in order. Later that night in the town square, Lance Armstrong spoke, so right in the massive crowd of people we got to go up on rafters and film everything from this wonderful view. Special Contribution: I worked every possible hour over my internship and I got a lot of writing practice when I was working the midnight to 8:00 a.m. shift. I helped the producers write readers and looked on their wires for kickers. It was really rewarding watching the newscast and hearing the story you wrote read on air. I also wrote a few VOSOT’s that got on the air, so again it was great feeling having your work presented before your eyes and ears. Advice to Future Interns: My advice to future interns is to make the best of your internship regardless of how much you enjoy it. You can learn so much if you put all of your effort into it and it really does feel rewarding in the end. Also, remember that the company chose you for a reason... they saw great potential. Have fun and learn all that you can. |
