Job & Internship

Preparing for the Internship Search

Preparing for your internship does not begin the semester before you plan to start. Instead, it begins the moment you step on campus. Here are some steps you can take now to help you land your dream internship.

  1. GET INVOLVED IN STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND PUBLICATIONS.
Greenlee School students have the opportunity to get involved with a variety of student media and professional organizations. As a matter of fact, we have more student media organizations than any other program in the state. Student organizations are a great way to gain experience while you are in school, and these experiences are highly desirable to employers.
  2. STAY CURRENT ON INDUSTRY PUBLICATIONS.
One of the best ways to learn about things that are happening in your industry is to read trade publications. The Greenlee School Reading Room subscribes to a number of industry trade publications including:
    • Advertising Age
    • Adweek
    • Mediaweek
    • Broadcasting & Cable
    • Folio
    • American Editor
    • American Journalism Review
    • Columbia Journalism Review
    • Editor & Publisher
    • Quill
    • PR Week
    • Communication Arts
    • News Photographer
  3. RESEARCH FUTURE EMPLOYERS.
Look at companies where you might like to intern. Check local resources such as online newspaper articles about those companies. Perform searches in Lexis-Nexis Academic, ABI-Inform and Business & Company ASAP. You should also take a look at the company Web sites.
  4. CONSIDER JOINING PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS.
Professional organizations offer students the opportunity to learn more about the industry as well as the opportunity to network with professionals in their field. Many professional organizations offer special rates to students while they are enrolled in college. Some professional organizations to consider are:
    • American Advertising Federation
    • American Copy Editors Society
    • Itnernation Special Events Society
    • National Association of Broadcasters
    • National Press Photographers Association
    • Public Relations Scociety of America
    • Radio-Television News Directors Association & Foundation
    • Society for News Design
    • Society of Professional Journalists
  5. USE DIRECTORIES TO FIND EMPLOYER CONTACTS AND DESCRIPTIONS.
Use the directories located in the Greenlee School's Reading Room to find the contact information for companies in your field as well as company descriptions.
