Internships are an integral part of the education of our students. They allow students to refine and expand the knowledge and skills gained inside and out of the classroom. Students are required to complete a professional 400-hour internship as their capstone course in each Greenlee major (advertising, journalism and mass communication and public relations).
While most journalism and mass communication programs recommend that students complete an internship, we've made it a requirement. Students in each Greenlee major are required to complete a professional 400-hour internship before graduation. Read more about the required ADVRT/JL MC/P R 499 course here. This ensures that all of our students graduate with hands-on career experience that will make them marketable to employers.
While students secure their own internships at a professional outlet of their choice, the School strives to help all students secure paid internship opportunities and provides financial support to offset the cost of unpaid internships. In 2014, Greenlee students completed more paid internships than unpaid internships for the first time since the School began collecting data in 2007.
Our graduates have gone on to very successful careers in local and national media outlets including CNN, MTV, The Wall Street Journal, The Des Moines Register, KCCI, Edelman and Meredith Corporation.
Students are responsible for securing their own internships, but faculty and staff members are available to assist students with:
