If they do not complete all coursework and the thesis/creative component during that time, they must either appeal their case to the Graduate College, cciting reasons why they should receive an extension, or re-take courses so that work falls within the five-year period. In many cases, students taking their graduate work one course at a time while they are professionally employed will be granted extensions to the five-year rule. All students in the School are required to complete 32 graduate credits.
