Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication

Graduate Program - Admission

Admission

Introduction

Full admission status is reserved for those in the upper one-half of their university's graduating class. Those who fall slightly short of this are sometimes admitted on restricted status that can be removed after 12 credits of B or better work. Those with limited backgrounds in journalism but with good academic records are ordinarily admitted on a provisional basis. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test score must also be submitted for admission. The ISU Graduate College Web site contains further information about graduate study, including online application procedures.

Tuition, Room and Board
Information on tuition, board and room will be found in the application materials from the university. Married students are eligible for university apartments. Single students may stay in the co-educational graduate residence, Buchanan Hall.

Assistantships
Both teaching and research assistantships are available. Preference is given to those with media experience and a record of high scholarship.

General
All applicants must meet the following admission standards:

• An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in a relevant course of study.
• A 3.0 undergraduate grade-point average.
• An official GRE score on the verbal, quantitative and analytical sections of the exam. Although no minimum score is required on the GRE, the last 25 successful applicants who took the revised version of the exam last year had an average score of 1200 on the three sections of the exam.
• International students must also submit a score of at least 570 on the paper-based TOEFL examination or a score of 230 on the electronic- or computer-based TOEFL. International students are also required to have media experience.

In addition, applicants must provide:

• A statement of purpose in which the applicant describes his or her objectives in pursuing the master's degree, career goals, and research interests.

• A resume that provides a summary of the applicant's academic and employment history, honors and publications (if any).

• Three letters of recommendation that attest to the applicant's aptitude for study at the graduate level.

• Examples of professional and scholarly work may also be submitted.

• An applicant whose scholastic average or GRE scores do not meet the Greenlee School requirement may be considered if the applicant presents evidence of notable professional qualifications or outstanding undergraduate academic work.

Although the Greenlee School reviews applications as they come, applications must be received by March 1 in order to receive full consideration for assistantships and fellowships. Inquiries concerning this program should be directed to:
