International Student Collaboration

This semester, Dr. Daniela Dimitrova's World Communication Systems class set out to gain a new perspective on globalization. They organized a series of online chats and a blog with students from Sofia University in Sofia, Bulgaria. While the chats and blog dealt mainly with globalization, everything from music to politics was discussed. It turns out that ISU journalism students have more in common with their Bulgarian counterparts than they ever could have imagined.

The online chat took place on March 31st and April 1st of 2008. Iowa State students were surprised to learn how much Bulgarian students knew about American culture. Many of the Bulgarian students knew how our political system worked as well as the candidates running for president. They had also watched a lot of the current movies showing in theaters in the United States. The Bulgarian students cited the internet and television as the two main facilitators of this media globalization. This collaboration was a unique experience that helped students halfway around the world gain valuable insight about globalization and the way it affects and impacts other cultures.
