Winners of the James W. Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism

This prestigious award is named after James W. Schwartz, who earned a bachelor's of science in agriculture journalism in 1941 and went on to chair the journalism department from 1965-1977. Schwartz also served as president of the Association for Education in Journalism.

Two Schwartz Awards were given in 1987: William E. Ames (M.S. 1952), historian and journalism educator, whose book on the National Intelligencer is still considered a classic of its kind; and Terry Anderson (1974), Middle East bureau chief for the Associated Press, who was held hostage in Lebanon.

Geneva Overholser, editor of The Des Moines Register and ombudsman at The Washington Post and the first recipient who was not an Iowa State journalism graduate.

John Madson (1951), prize-winning outdoor writer and environmentalist.

Jack Shelley, not a journalism department alumnus, but Shelley served as a member of the journalism faculty after a distinguished career at WHO Radio and Television in Des Moines.

KCCI-TV in Des Moines.

Ralph W. Anderson (1933), former publisher and editor in the Grundy Center and the Farm Bureau spokesman.
